American Property Improvement began in 1992 with borrowed money, a Yellow Pages ad, and a willingness to work hard. After a successful career in restaurant management, founder Mark Buxton knew he wanted to build something of his own. He had learned the basics of paver installation while working alongside a friend in Oklahoma City and saw greater opportunity in the growing Houston area. So he made the move—waiting tables at night while saving enough money to place a Yellow Pages ad and begin building a landscape business during the day.

What Mark didn't know, he learned. He became a student of the trade, learning by doing and bringing a natural engineering mind to the way outdoor spaces were designed and built. As the company grew, so did its capabilities—from landscaping and pavers to the integrated landscapes, hardscapes, outdoor living spaces, and custom pools API creates today.

More than three decades later, the business has grown considerably, but the principles behind it haven't changed. Do good work. Treat people well. Keep your word. And build things the right way.

Today, American Property Improvement remains a family-owned business. Mark continues to provide hands-on leadership throughout projects, while his wife Lori—often the first person you'll connect with at API—brings her eye for design to the process. Together, they believe the relationships built along the way matter just as much as the spaces they create.

And when they're not talking about pavers, pools, landscapes, or someone's next backyard project, you'll often find them on Galveston Bay doing one of their favorite things together—fishing.
